Once New Zealand’s biggest gold mine, now a empty ghost town

Once New Zealand’s biggest gold mine, now a empty ghost town

Waiuta was founded in 1906, it’s main income was it’s gold mine’s. Waiuta is widely known for their goldmine which was founded in 1906, known as the Birthday Quartz Reef as it was found on King Edward VII's birthday. The first mineshaft operated in 1908 called the Blackwater Shaft, and it was 563m in depth.

From 1906 to 1951 it was the South Island's largest gold mine and the village was home to 600 people. When the Second World War started, a decline in the number of miners occured, because of lot’s having to go to war. On July 9, 1951 the Blackwater Shaft collapsed, and the mine flooded.

From 1908 to 1937 gold was processed at the Snowy Battery. The gold was pounded out of the rock using the water powered ‘battery’ with iron stamps. In the Snowy River valley,  quartz was pounded to powder by heavy stamps and the gold was saved through various processes. Then they were treated with cyanide in the lowest building.

It ended up as a ghost town, because when the mine collapsed lots of people lost their jobs. Without the income of the mine there was no reason for people to stay, so they packed up and left.

Now Waiuta is a historic site for tourists to visit.

The Importance of Integrity

The Importance of Integrity

Kiwi kids news featured article.

1. Why do you think integrity is important? It is important because if you don’t have integrity then you do not trust yourself. If other people did not show integrity then you can not trust them.

2.How has your integrity or character been tested to the limit? What did you do in response? When two people ask you a question were one answer would make one person upset and the other answer would upset the other person, I said they were both wrong.

3.Do you think that integrity is a part of your nature? Do your instincts warn you when you are doing something that doesn’t show integrity? I think my instincts is to trust myself, it is a part of my nature, I don’t like when I do not show integrity.

4.Do you think the whole world could one day show integrity? If not, why might this be impossible. I think it is not possible because some people do not trust themselves and some people are not trustworthy.

5.Do you think our national and international world leaders display integrity? How and how not? Be specific. I think most prime ministers and royal people try to show integrity but they have so many people to please that they find it very hard. Sometimes they could look back on a mistake and not trust themselves.

Kiwi kids news canpassion:

1. Why do you think compassion is important? What good does it bring to the world? If people are sad and you are compassionate it might make them happy. I no one was compassionate then everyone would be sad.
2. What good does compassion bring to the world? Think both directly and indirectly. If there wasn't compassion then there would be chaos. For example everyone would be mean to each other there would be so many robbers and no one would care.
3. Does showing compassion to others change the way people treat us. Yes because if we treat other people nicely then the will to the same, treat people the way you want to be treated. For example if you treated someone like they were useless then they will do the same.
4. How are five ways you can show compassion in your everyday life? Be nice to people, help people if they need help, if someone is sad try to cheer them up, ask people who look sad if they are ok, never harm people unless in self defence.
5. Ask your parents if they think compassion is important to the way you are raised. Ask your teacher if they think it is important to the way they teach. Ask your classmates if they think it is important to the way they interact with friends. Discuss it with them if you think you need to.
