Once New Zealand’s biggest gold mine, now a empty ghost town

Once New Zealand’s biggest gold mine, now a empty ghost town

Waiuta was founded in 1906, it’s main income was it’s gold mine’s. Waiuta is widely known for their goldmine which was founded in 1906, known as the Birthday Quartz Reef as it was found on King Edward VII's birthday. The first mineshaft operated in 1908 called the Blackwater Shaft, and it was 563m in depth.

From 1906 to 1951 it was the South Island's largest gold mine and the village was home to 600 people. When the Second World War started, a decline in the number of miners occured, because of lot’s having to go to war. On July 9, 1951 the Blackwater Shaft collapsed, and the mine flooded.

From 1908 to 1937 gold was processed at the Snowy Battery. The gold was pounded out of the rock using the water powered ‘battery’ with iron stamps. In the Snowy River valley,  quartz was pounded to powder by heavy stamps and the gold was saved through various processes. Then they were treated with cyanide in the lowest building.

It ended up as a ghost town, because when the mine collapsed lots of people lost their jobs. Without the income of the mine there was no reason for people to stay, so they packed up and left.

Now Waiuta is a historic site for tourists to visit.

The Importance of Integrity

The Importance of Integrity

Kiwi kids news featured article.

1. Why do you think integrity is important? It is important because if you don’t have integrity then you do not trust yourself. If other people did not show integrity then you can not trust them.

2.How has your integrity or character been tested to the limit? What did you do in response? When two people ask you a question were one answer would make one person upset and the other answer would upset the other person, I said they were both wrong.

3.Do you think that integrity is a part of your nature? Do your instincts warn you when you are doing something that doesn’t show integrity? I think my instincts is to trust myself, it is a part of my nature, I don’t like when I do not show integrity.

4.Do you think the whole world could one day show integrity? If not, why might this be impossible. I think it is not possible because some people do not trust themselves and some people are not trustworthy.

5.Do you think our national and international world leaders display integrity? How and how not? Be specific. I think most prime ministers and royal people try to show integrity but they have so many people to please that they find it very hard. Sometimes they could look back on a mistake and not trust themselves.

Kiwi kids news canpassion:

1. Why do you think compassion is important? What good does it bring to the world? If people are sad and you are compassionate it might make them happy. I no one was compassionate then everyone would be sad.
2. What good does compassion bring to the world? Think both directly and indirectly. If there wasn't compassion then there would be chaos. For example everyone would be mean to each other there would be so many robbers and no one would care.
3. Does showing compassion to others change the way people treat us. Yes because if we treat other people nicely then the will to the same, treat people the way you want to be treated. For example if you treated someone like they were useless then they will do the same.
4. How are five ways you can show compassion in your everyday life? Be nice to people, help people if they need help, if someone is sad try to cheer them up, ask people who look sad if they are ok, never harm people unless in self defence.
5. Ask your parents if they think compassion is important to the way you are raised. Ask your teacher if they think it is important to the way they teach. Ask your classmates if they think it is important to the way they interact with friends. Discuss it with them if you think you need to.

KIwi kids news, busy kid

Critical Thinking Challenges:
1. Do you believe kids being really busy is a good or a bad thing? Why? I think that it is good and bad! If you are busy with sports or other talents you may get a job to do with them! But i can be bad because you can get stressed and very tired!
2 1/2. If you think bad, think of three solutions for this issue. I think I is bad because you can get very stressed and tired! And you could not get enough time to there self.
2 2/2. If you think good, think of three ways to encourage other kids to get busier! I think that one way is to tell them that they will get fit if they are playing sports! Another way is to say that they could be famous because of this extra work.
3. Think about the role of teachers and parents in encouraging extra-curricular activities. Is it up to them, or to the kids themselves? I think it is up to the kids, but sometimes the parent need to decide if the kids won't!

Practical Tasks:
1. Ask your parents what they think is best, and what worked with you and your siblings.
2. Make yourself a schedule for this week that keeps you busy in the afternoon or when you would usually have downtime. If it goes well you could make it permanent! Done, i don’t have a photo!
3. Research the positives and negatives of being a kid with a busy schedule. What are the short and long term effects? Link to website that I read.

Week 8 reflections!

This week i have done my rapunzel moment in time. i have done a lot of kahn! i have tried to stay away from big distractions so i can get my work done!

rapunzel moment in time!

This term our class has bean reading fairy tales! this week we read rapunzel, so we had to describe a moment in time!

The bright, blossoming garden was surrounded by a giant, stone wall, even though it was old it still towered above most things. No one dared to enter! It belonged to a sorceress who possessed great power, she could level hills to tiny mounds. She could give life even, but could also take it away! Without knowing the tales that it held, you could tell that the sorceress did not want anyone in! In the garden there were beautiful flowers and herbs, shining with dew!

Original sentence:

The garden was surrounded by a high wall, and no one dared enter, because it belonged to a sorceress who possessed great power and was feared by everyone.

plastic bags everywhere

Critical Questions:
1. Do you think that NOT using plastic bags is important? Or do you think it’s not a good deal? I think it is a good idea to ban plastic bags
2. What will happen if we continue to use plastic bags? Will it affect us? Will it affect other animals? Will it affect sea creatures? It will save hundreds of turtles and fish!
3. Do you think we will ever be able to get rid of plastic bags globally? I believe that we could, but only with great effort!
4. If you couldn’t use plastic anymore, what is the worst thing that would happen? I could not play with any toys.
Practical Thinking Questions:
1. What is a solution to stop plastic bags from being produced? What is a solution to stop plastic being produced? Find a replacement and use that instead of plastic
2. Ask your parents if they use more plastic lately than they used to 10 years ago. Why have they made a change? Why not?
3. This week, try and go plastic free. At home, in your lunch, at school. Give it a go! If it is easy, well done! If it is hard, send a letter to the companies that made it hard for you. Ask your favourite brand of biscuits why they package in plastic rather than paper. Write a letter to your local MP demanding change. Let’s make this happen!

Week 5 kiwi kids news

Critical Questions:
1. Why do you think lying is bad? Why do you think honesty is important? I think honesty is important because if you aren't honest people won't trust you!
2. What are some good things, if any, that can come from lying? you can get out of trouble or get out of doing something!
3. Do you think we lie for a reason, because of the way we are brought up, or simply because of human nature? I think we have evolved to be more lazy and we lie because we don't want to take blame or so don't haft to do something!
Practical Thinking Questions:
1. Do you think lying is an issue that can ever be solved? How can we do this? We could start a community challenge to go 1 week without lying and see what happens.
2. Ask your friends when the last time they lied to you was. Tell them the last time you lied to them. It might be slightly awkward, but most likely you’ll both think the other one was silly for lying in the first place.
3. Write a short story about what the world would be like if lying was impossible. Even write a little story about a family conversation at the dinner table if no one could lie… hopefully no one insults the dinner!

The no lying week had begun! Everyone was going to there windows like normal but instead of saying ‘Good morning everyone’ they instead yeled “EVERYONE BE QUIET, I HATE YOU ALL”! As i trudged down the stairs into the brightly lit kitchen i said to my older sister “get away from me you piece of trash” as i sat down!

Kiwi kids news W4

Critical Thinking Challenges:
1. Think about a computer game you enjoy playing. What skills do you need in order to complete it or be successful at it? Subnautica - you need to know how to manage lots jobs and how to look carefully! - My subnautica walkthrough website.
2. How do computer game designers make games fun to play? Why do you keep playing them? I think before the makers of the game make it fully public they get some certain people to play them! I keep playing subnautica because it is based around exploring, and there is always new things to to find/explore!

Practical Tasks:
Imagine there was no technology at all in your classroom. What would it look like? There would not be anyWhat learning would take place? What learning wouldn’t take place. I think that most the learning would not take place!

Is there a distinction between games and learning? I think some games are based around just playing and no learning, but sometimes the games are based around learning.

Kiwi kids news feachered news!

Critical Thinking Challenges:
1) Imagine that the rest of the world really has forgotten New Zealand exists, what are the pros and cons of being in the world but not part of it?
1)- A pro is we have a higher chance of not being in a war or a battle between two countries! A con is that we might be left out of some things!

2) Why would, for example, India or China be upset if a map was made without their country on it, but map-makers are happy to forget New Zealand?
2)- Because we are a ‘humble’ country.

3) Use a computer or by freehand, draw your own map of the world and remove a country without telling anyone. What does the map look like? Is it odd or is the missing country unnoticeable? Show it to classmates, can they recognise which country is missing?

4) Research into how maps have changed and evolved over time. Look at all the changes and how map-makers have shown the world in different ways. What kinds of things do you notice? Can you spot the same countries and cities in maps from different times and places?
This website might be a good starting point oldmapsonline.org

5) Visit worldmapswithout.nz and look at all the maps that people have made with An Important Missing Ingredient… OK?
